“All-you-can-bike” Day
How many miles can I do from sunrise to sunset?
Sponsored by NUYWA. and Travelmap
Day: February 3rd, 2021 / Bike: Road bike / Total Mileage: 104 miles
Original Idea: Ok I found the best idea for a mini adventure, haha.... What if I was trying to cycle all day? Just to see if I could do it? From sunrise to sunset? Now that the days are not too long, should be possible? How many miles would I be able to do?
Any idea of an adventure is good, no matter the ended target or purpose or inner motivation. No matter what! It’s YOUR adventure. You just have to come up with it and do it. Most people either don’t think the idea is worth doing, either they have one but they don’t do it.
SO..... on my next adventure, I’m doing my “all-you-can-bike” day, and see where it takes me!
Reality: Tale of our mini adventure: Our bike century with Rick Leah around the south side of the SF Bay yesterday.
My original plans were to do about 135 miles, the loop of the whole South SF Bay, alone, from sunrise to sunset. I had calculated that an average of 15 miles an hour would do, within the 10 hours of daylight. But as we all know, plans are made to be changed.
My fellow ocean rowing friend Rick contacted me the day before to join. Of course!!! As he was driving up from Monterey in the morning, we had a bit of a later start (8:07am). I had to treat him with a coffee and an oatmeal before going, right?!! Then we went slower than expected crossing the city, and pretty much all the way to Redwood City was “stop-and-go”, red lights and stop signs. After a couples of tacos that “hit the spot”, We decided to do a short cut and cross Dumbarton bridge instead of cycling all the way to Milpitas. Save time if we didn’t want to cycle past midnight.
We were greeted at the other side of the bridge by Carlo Facchino, who is my coach and crew mate in our 2016 row to Hawaii. Of course we took 20 minutes to chat, it had been a long time.... Then we started our way up through the marsh land, and the gravel roads of the trail, as the headwind picked up. (Expected...). Anyways, our pace was slowed to 10mph. We still had a lot of miles to cover and darkness was arriving fast. In Alameda, we decided to take the Bart to Embarcadero and ride up, instead of pushing to Richmond bridge as planned. We came out of the Bart station and we had barely missed the sunset. It was 6pm and with the darkness the cold came. Up the same way we had come down, pass the Golden Gate, beautiful Sausalito, and arriving home around 8pm.
Beautiful day of medley Neighborhoods and landscapes. Adventure modified as it came to us. Let’s do it, and Adapt along the way.
